TY Danjuma becomes the new chairman of ntel: here are things you never knew about him


Yesterday, Nigeria’s fifth largest telecommunications company, ntel, announced the emergence of elder statesman, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, popularly known as TY Danjuma, as the new Chairman of the Board.



Following General Danjuma’s inaugural board meeting, the former Chairman, Dr. Tunde Ayeni, is now the Vice Chairman. Other members of the board include Captain Idahosa Okunbo, Abiola Ayeni, Kasheem Shettima, Philip Chukwu, Kola Adesina, John Darlington, Dan Kunle, Babatunde Omotoba and Kamar Abass.

“We welcome General Danjuma’s support as we add momentum to our growth and development in Nigeria’s telecoms industry. We expect to benefit enormously from his sterling leadership credentials,” said the CEO of ntel, Kamar Abass.

Ntel is Nigeria’s most advanced mobile 4G/LTE network, providing super fast internet access that enables high-definition voice, data and video services. According to ntel, its network is built on the 900/1800 Mhz frequency bands which are the best propagation frequencies for the deployment of 4G/LTE technology.

The company made its first on-net test data call in Lagos on Monday, January 18, 2016 and followed this with its first on-net Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) call in Lagos on Thursday, February 25, 2016. It commenced commercial operations on Friday April 8, 2016 in Lagos and Abuja, while network services in Port-Harcourt are scheduled to commence early in Q4. What you didn’t know about TY Danjuma


To many, TY Danjuma is an unsung hero of Nigeria.

He has played an active role in both Nigerian politics and in the army.

He was involved in the Nigerian counter-coup of 1966 with the 4th Battalion in Mokola, Ibadan.

He was appointed as the Minister of Defence in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 1999 cabinet.

In 2003, he was made the Chairperson for the Investigative Committee on the Warri Conflict.

Goodluck Jonathan nominated him as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council when he was the acting president.

He is the owner of Nigeria America Line (NAL), which initially leased a ship called ‘Hannatu’ that traded between Lagos and Santos in Brazil, when Nigeria’s bilateral trade agreement opened sea routes to economies in South American markets.

He is the owner of COMET Shipping Agencies Nigeria Ltd and South Atlantic Petroleum Limited (SAPETRO)

He is a philanthropist and the founder of TY Danjuma Foundation.
