The much awaited iPhone 7 was announced some days back after months of rumors and leaks. The design is almost identical to last year’s iPhone 6s and much hasn’t changed. The few changes made to the body include repositioned antennae lines, absence of the 3.5mm audio jack and a new home button.
However, perhaps the most talked about change in the iPhone 7 is the dropping of the headphone jack (3.5mm audio jack). Instead, Apple expects you to use an Earphone that connects directly to the Lightning connector or use wireless earphones called AirPods.
The iPhone 7 will also offer an adapter that allows you connect a traditional earphone to the smartphone via the lightning port.
The phone has a brand new processor, a better display and an improved camera. Nintendo also came on stage to demonstrate the new Super Mario Run coming to iOS.
Design
Staying true to what we saw before the device got released, this looks like an improved iPhone 6s. The device comes in two sizes: a 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and a bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus. The form factor is almost the same as the iPhone 6s but a few things have changed.
However, like we said earlier the headphone jack has been dropped. Secondly, Space Grey has been dropped as a colour option.
In its place, Apple is introducing two new colours: Jet Black and Black. This two colours will join the existing Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold options. The iPhone 7 is water tight, making it the first iPhone to offer water resistance. iPhone 7 can survive in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes.
The home button has been improved to offer taptic feedback.
The Display
On paper, the iPhone 7 seems to be offering the same screen as the 2015 iteration. It is essentially a 4.7-inch IPS Display with 750 x 1334 pixels resolution and 3D Touch.
However, Apple is claiming it is 25% brighter, which should result in better outdoor viewing. The new display supports a wider colour gamut, which should make for a more brilliant screen.
The Cameras
This is probably the biggest thing about the iPhone 7. The smaller iPhone 7 comes with a single 12MP camera while the bigger iPhone 7 Plus has a dual 12MP camera setup at the back. There’s a slight bulge many find offensive. A larger f/1.8 aperture that allows more light will improve low-light photography and produce clearer images.
The front camera on both models too have been upgraded with a 7MP shooter.
The iPhone 7 Plus dual camera isn’t actually new–it goes all the way back to HTC One M8 but the technology has improved over the years. The iPhone 7 Plus camera setup consists of a 12MP wide-angle and a 2x telephoto lens. The camera lets you do optical image zoom up to 2x. You can still zoom up to 10x but anything from 3x switches to digital zoom.
As with devices with similar camera setup (LG G5, Huawei P9), you can shoot images with bokeh effect. Both models come with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and quad-LED true-tone flash.
Hardware & Software
The iPhone 7 comes with a more powerful processor. According to Apple, the new A10 Fusion chip is twice as fast as the A8 chip in the iPhone 6and 40% faster than the A9 chip in the iPhone 6S. It features a quad-core processor with a 64-bit architecture and a hexa-core graphics processor.
iPhone 7 runs on iOS 10 out of the box and is available with 32GB, 128GB, or 256GB built-in storage. It supports download speeds of up to 450 Mbps via 4G LTE. iPhone 7 comes with improved battery life for internet use with up to 14 hours on Wi-Fi and up to 12 hours on 4G LTE. However, talktime remains the same 14 hours.
