Netflix dominates Golden Globe nods for streaming services, but others gaining ground

Streaming continues to announce its presence in Hollywood when it comes to providing blockbuster, high-quality entertainment — and this year’s awards season is already shaping up to give accolades where they’re due.
This year’s Golden Globe nominations have the streaming leader Netflix dominating, as the New York Times reports here.
“In a sharp reversal of past patterns, Netflix, a relative upstart, captured eight television nominations, beating HBO, which had seven,” the Times wrote about Thursday’s announcements. “Last year, HBO had 15 nods. Showtime also appears to have been dented by the streaming upstarts. It took just three nominations, down from nine last year.”

Best television drama series nominations include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s Narcos.
Best TV series for a comedy or musical was dominated by streamers: Hulu’s new series from Jason Reitman, Casual, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent all made the nominations. HBO’s funny yet all too painful satire of the tech world, Silicon Valley, also made the cut.
Actors in streaming shows also received nominations for their work, with Netflix shows dominating the roster for leading roles, including Robin Wright (House of Cards), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) and Aziz Ansari (Master of None).

Transparent actors Jeffrey Tambor and Judith Light were nominated as well, Tambor for his leading role and Light for her supporting role in Amazon’s hit series, its second season premiering today.
In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical. And Mad Max received a best drama and a best director nomination.
Steve Jobs, despite its poor box office performance, did receive four nods: Kate Winslet for best actress in a supporting role, Michael Fassbender for best performance by an actor, Aaron Sorkin for best screenplay and best original score.
The Golden Globes are on NBC Jan. 10.
